How To Style The Evening Shirt Collection

Posted 09.11.18  - Style

Our Evening Shirt Collection celebrates, amongst many things, individuality. We worked with five prominent figures in the world of menswear and asked them to style a shirt each.

Looking back at old bespoke orders from customers to imagery of famous clientele past and present, the Evening Shirt Collection has taken the best in silhouette, fabric and detailing to create a set of unique dress shirts in an elegant, new Tailored Fit.

With a focus on craftsmanship and attention to detail, each piece brings an element of individuality and refined confidence.

Cream Silk Ruffle Front Evening Shirt

One of the stand out pieces was inspired by Mr. Warren Beatty, and specifically, a shirt we created for him in 1967.

Aleks Cvetkovic to dress the shirt in a way befitting the modern day man.

“I’ve always been very interested in 1970s and ‘80s style, and the shirt’s obvious early ‘70s influences appealed to me. Paired with a charcoal merino roll neck and a dark chocolate suit, the shirt channels more than a touch of retro rock star flair. The rich brown colours in the suit’s whipcord cloth bring out the shirt’s subtle ivory tone, too. I always wear a cream shirt with brown tailoring—it’s a subtly different look, but a match made in heaven. All I need now to wear this shirt in the evenings is a dark chocolate dinner suit!”

Black and Grey Sea Island Quality Cotton Evening Shirt

A fashion and portrait photographer by trade, Alistair Guy is a name synonymous with the menswear scene in London and beyond. Not one to follow rules, Alistair has a unique way of making eveningwear work around his style as opposed to the other way around. Opting for the Black Sea Island Quality Cotton Evening Shirt with a grey brushed cotton pleated bib, Alistair talks about how the shirt worked for him, “This simple midnight corduroy suit went well with the shirt as it complimented it in a more casual way. Wearing it with a vest allowed me to feel more comfortable and less formal but smart enough to go about my business.”

Baby Blue Sea Island Quality Cotton Evening Shirt

When it comes to film, Turnbull & Asser has history with the well-dressed gentleman spy—namely the Kingsman agents and a certain Mr. James Bond. However, in 1966, we dressed Terrance Stamp for the spy caper Modesty Blaise. In it, he wore a baby blue shirt with matching tie—which inadvertently birthed the matching shirt-tie trend, and it was this colourway that was used to inspire the second Sea Island Quality Cotton pleated bib shirt.

We worked with Andrew Weitz in Los Angeles for the baby blue Evening Shirt. With Awards season in full swing, he wore his with a navy blue double-breasted tuxedo and blue velvet bow tie for the day; and formal black tie for the evening.

“I love a baby blue tuxedo shirt as an option. Wearing it with a navy blue double breasted tuxedo or a classic black tuxedo, you cannot go wrong. It adds that “extra pop.” I paired the navy tuxedo with a velvet blue and the black tuxedo with a black satin version, both by Turnbull & Asser. I wore blue and sterling silver cufflinks to round out the looks.”

Black and White Stripe Evening Shirt

From Los Angeles to Toronto, Mr. Jonathan Cavaliere is an immaculately dressed man who we first worked with for last year’s Toronto By Appointment trunk show. More relaxed in style, he chose the ‘60s inspired candy stripe shirt with a grandad collar. “I've always been infatuated with updating traditional menswear. This grandad collared candy stripe Evening Shirt from Turnbull & Asser was inspired by the ‘60s but feels very modern with the laidback nature of dressing at the moment. I personally love the black button placket down the front which, when buttoned all the way up, can resemble a faux tie.”

White Superfine Cotton Evening Shirt

Inspired by an extremely classic bespoke order with a distinctive long point collar, the archive-influenced shirt in our exclusive superfine herringbone cotton suited menswear tailor and all-around gentleman Maximilian Mogg with aplomb. “I love the high collar, especially since I have a rather long neck and face. It’s quite art déco—a movement that has always inspired me—while Turnbull’s signature three-button cuff, the herringbone weave of the fabric, and the smoked mother-of-pearl buttons add a certain "je ne sais quoi" to this otherwise very conservative ensemble.”
