2017: A Year In Review

Posted 05.01.18  - Culture

The first week of the New Year has come to an end, and here at Turnbull & Asser, we have been feeling reflective. 2017 saw us maintain our close relationship with the silver screen, continue to create unique collaborations, dress the world’s most eminent gents and much, much more. So much more, in fact, that we decided to take a look back at the biggest highlights of what proved to be an incredibly eventful year.

The Seasonal Collections

Inspired by 1970s Monte Carlo and Mayfair’s notorious yesteryear, our SS17 Velocity and AW17 Mayfair Tales collections saw a host of intricate designs, motifs, fabrics and weaves come together to create some truly individual pieces – for both the peacock and the discerning gentleman.

Around The World in 13 Trunk Shows

Our By Appointment trunk shows–spearheaded by bespoke experts, Messrs James Webb, James Cook and Andrew Courtney–saw us tour the United States, as well as the rest of the world. No less than thirteen cities were visited, namely Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Seoul, Singapore, Delhi, Bangalore and Helsinki, with a new round set for April and October 2018.

A Return of the Kingsman Agents

We reunited with Eggsy, Harry Hart et al. for the second instalment of Kingsman, this time featuring our American counterparts, Statesman, in The Golden Circle. Creating a number of bespoke shirts for the cast, the gentleman spies were in safe hands (as were we). Excitingly, the Kingsman franchise made history by releasing the clothes as part of an eponymous collection, created by Mr. Porter and costume designer Arianne Phillips. We’d go on to collaborate with Ms. Phillips once more for the English National Opera’s Marnie, and you can watch our interview with her, here.

The Eau de Parfum

Following the success of our limited edition collaborative Eau de Parfum with Floris, we decided to re-release 71/72 in September. The scent was created to evoke the feeling of visiting our flagship London store for the first time. Jermyn Street, bottled. It is available to purchase online and in-store, at Turnbull & Asser and Floris perfumers.

The 50th Anniversary

Further proof that time really does fly when you’re having fun, Mr. Benn – the lovable character created by Mr. David McKee – celebrated 50 years in 2017. We decided to commemorate this anniversary with a series of limited edition, 007-inspired pocket squares. We also spoke to a reflective Mr. McKee in a candid interview during his exhibition at the Illustration Cupboard.

The Tattooist & The Rake

A name that needs no introduction, Mr. Mo Coppoletta worked with Turnbull & Asser head of design Dean Gomilsek-Cole to create three denim shirts, inspired by the Industrial Revolution, for our friends at The Rake Magazine.

The One For The Boys

Dedicated to raising awareness of all male cancers, we collaborated with One For The Boys to design a trio of limited edition accessories, with 10% of profits from each sale donated to them. To celebrate the collaboration, we interviewed founder Ms. Sofia Davis and brand ambassador, Mr. Samuel L. Jackson.

The Product of the Year

And finally, no year would be complete without finding out what your favourite Turnbull & Asser item was. Unsurprisingly, our Bond fans ensured 007 stayed top of the ranks, with our Casino Royale bow tie being the most purchased item online in 2017.

With a range of new capsule collections that champion our shirts, trunk shows in new cities around the world and more in 2018, here’s to an even bigger and better year ahead.
