MR PORTER's Rocketman by Kingsman

Posted 29.05.19  - Style

Following on from the success of our previous collaborations with MR PORTER on the Kingsman franchise, we are delighted to be a part of the latest capsule collection for the Elton John musical film, Rocketman.

The capsule, which launched on 29th May, is inspired by John Reid—the former manager and ex-boyfriend of Elton John. Reid is portrayed in the film by Richard Madden.

Sam Kershaw of MR PORTER details the inspiration behind the collection, noting the influence that the 1970s era played. He explains that “there is a strong focus on tailoring, which, during the ‘70s, is when double-breasted styles were in high demand.” Fabric choice, colours and prints were also factors taken into consideration when planning the collection.

For the capsule, bold patterns and bright colours were firmly at the forefront. Our Creative Director, Becky French, said, “It was such a fun brief to work on. To be able to be bold, playful and eccentric with this project and not having to think about it being commercial or too safe. Elton John and the characters surrounding him celebrate style and music with confidence.”

MR PORTER approached us to do a limited run of ties, shirts and a pocket square to celebrate the launch of the film. We were sent photos of the ties, after which we asked our silk mill to delve into its archives to find similar patterns that we could re-work and re-colour, thus recreating the original ties as closely as possible. “It was a great process and the mill really came up with the goods – resulting in some wonderfully beautiful designs.“ said French.

“For the shirts, we used bold stripes woven in Italy and styled them with a white long point collar which we initially developed for our Evening Shirt Collection last year, to capture the vintage ‘70s theme. The standout for this collection was the light blue shirt with an embroidered paisley placket. The embroidery was drawn and artworked by our designer, Lizzie Sutherland, and then realised by London embroiderers Hand & Lock. Subtle choices of thread and layout proportion means this is a very accurate representation of what you see in the film."

This partnership is a continuation of the Kingsman ‘costume to collection’ range by MR PORTER. Rocketman is out in cinemas now and you can shop the collection via MRPORTER.com from Wednesday 29th May, 2019. Film imagery courtesy of Paramount Pictures' Rocketman.
