Turnbull & Asser: How to Spring Clean Your Wardrobe

Posted 17.04.18  - Style

If you’re into clothes then chances are you’re a hoarder. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but when it comes to getting dressed in the morning you might struggle with where to begin. Which shade of blue jumper should I wear? Is it jumper weather? Derbies or loafers? Before you know it, one of life’s great mini-stresses has infiltrated your morning and you’ve drawn a sartorial mind blank. What you need is a clothing cull to simplify your morning routine. The changing of the seasons is a great place to start, and what better time for a wardrobe reshape than spring?

Shirt

Fabric should also be paid close attention to when it comes to your warm weather shirting. Look out for lightweight Oxford cotton shirts, the finest of which are made in Turnbull & Asser’s Gloucester factory. A new arrival for the British brand, the ‘Journey’ collection includes a button-down crafted from a crease-resistant, easy care Oxford cotton fabric made in collaboration with Thomas Mason that’s ideal for the gentleman on the move. Why not opt one finished in lilac? A surprisingly versatile alternative to white or pale blue, lilac is a stylish update that’s perfect for spring.

Blazer

For those that appreciate good tailoring, the blazer is often the most heralded piece in one’s wardrobe. This doesn’t mean that one needs multiple versions of the same style of jacket though – a mistake that men often make. What you do need however are blazers that are seasonal and are cut from fabrics that are appropriate for the current weather, so, when spring comes around, a jacket made from breathable cotton, linen, hopsack, silk, or a combination of all of these will do perfectly. Pay close attention to how the jacket is cut too – a soft, unstructured style is preferable as they are far more comfortable under the Sun’s heat than heavily structured versions. Ticking all the above boxes is Turnbull & Asser’s Bain navy cotton jacket. With three patch pockets, slim notch lapels, a buggy lined construction and made from Italian navy cotton, it could form the backbone of your spring tailoring wardrobe.

Ties

Think seasonality doesn’t apply to your neckwear? Think again. Ties are one of the easiest ways to inject some colour into your clothing – think pastel pinks, yellows and spring greens, all appropriate for the warmer months to come. T&A regularly have a constant stream of new ties dropping throughout spring and beyond, with current highlights including their mini Havana-inspired collection.

Accessories

As with ties, your wider accessory collection can be overhauled when spring hits, with the dark, sombre-coloured pocket squares and socks of winter replaced with the optimistic tones of spring. Despite what many believe, your tie and pocket square should never match; rather, the colours in each should complement each other, or, if you really want to cause disruption, completely clash. Go for something in between and opt for T&A’s hexagon printed silk pocket square – the pink pulls out the similar shade in the tie above. As for socks, a general menswear rule states they should match the tone of your trousers, but if you want to make a statement then pastels are your friend. Pair them with smart, Goodyear-welted shoes from the likes of Crockett & Jones – Northampton’s finest.
